  1. A rotary petrol engine developed by the
  2. German engineer Felix Wankel (1902-) in the
  3. 1950s. It operates according to the same
  4. stages as the four-stroke petrol engine
  5. cycle, but these stages take place in
  6. different sectors of a figure-of-eight
  7. chamber in the space between the chamber
  8. walls and a triangular rotor. Power is
  9. produced once on every turn on the rotor. The
  10. Wankel engine is simpler in construction than
  11. the normal piston petrol engine, and produces
  12. rotary power directly (instead of via a
  13. crankshaft). Problems with rotor seals have
  14. prevented its widespread use.
